How the Hemmer Foot Works:
This ingenious Singer foot uses a scroll-shaped opening to automatically create a narrow rolled hem:
Scroll Design: The front of the foot features a curved scroll or funnel shape. As fabric feeds through this scroll, it automatically curls the raw edge into a double-folded narrow hem.
Automatic Folding: Unlike manual hemming where you fold and press the fabric edge twice, the hemmer foot does this automatically as you sew. The scroll curls the fabric edge, and the needle stitches through the folded layers, creating a perfect 5/32" rolled hem.
Continuous Hemming: Once you get the fabric started in the scroll, you can sew continuously without stopping to fold or press. This makes hemming long edges (like scarves or curtains) much faster and more consistent.
Perfect For:
- Scarves – Beautiful narrow hems on silk, chiffon, or lightweight scarves
- Handkerchiefs – Classic narrow rolled edges
- Napkins – Professional-looking table linens
- Lightweight Curtains – Delicate hem finish on sheer curtains
- Blouse Hems – Narrow hems on lightweight blouses
- Delicate Garments – Any sheer or lightweight fabric requiring a narrow hem
- Decorative Edges – Add a finished edge to fabric projects
How to Use the Hemmer Foot:
Using the hemmer foot requires some practice to master, but it's a time-saving tool once you get the hang of it:
- Prepare the fabric: For the first few inches, press the fabric edge twice to create a crease, and finger-press it tightly
- Position and begin: Slide the prepared fabric under the foot, guiding the folded edge into the scroll-shaped opening at the front
- Start sewing: Lower the needle and sew a few stitches to secure the fabric. Pull the thread tails to keep the fabric aligned
- Guide the fabric: Continue sewing slowly, gently guiding the fabric's raw edge into the scroll to keep the rolled hem folding evenly
- Practice makes perfect: The key is maintaining consistent tension and guiding the fabric smoothly into the scroll
Tips for Success:
- Start with practice fabric – Master the technique before working on your final project
- Sew slowly – Rushing causes uneven feeding through the scroll
- Use lightweight fabrics – The hemmer works best on sheer, lightweight materials
- Keep fabric taut – Gentle tension helps fabric feed evenly through the scroll
- Adjust stitch length – Shorter stitches create a more secure hem
Why This Hemmer Foot is Special:
The Singer hemmer foot was a common accessory included in attachment boxes with vintage Singer slant needle machines. These Simanco-made feet represent quality engineering from Singer's golden age. The scroll design is precisely calibrated to create consistent 5/32" rolled hems – a specific size that's perfect for delicate work.
While it requires practice to master, once you learn the technique, the hemmer foot saves enormous time compared to manually folding and pressing narrow hems. It's especially valuable for long edges like scarves or curtains where manual hemming would be tedious.
